Aurora - Wall Sculpture

'Aurora'. Large wall-mounted sculpture.

Sustainably sourced Tasmanian oak timber, acrylic paint, mixed metals. 1210mm wide, 480mm high, 135mm depth to wall.

Aurora incorporates an array of timbers set at progressing and precisely-calculated angles so it appears to twist and move as you walk past it.

The edges are painted in acrylic paint which I tinted myself to progress from burnt orange to a pretty bold yellow in the centre. I enjoy the way adding this stepped gradient of colour enhances the sense of movement and dynamism in this piece.

Once completed, I was totally stumped on what to call it. Then that night a spectacular Aurora Australis occurred in the southern hemisphere sky, and the name suddenly hit me 'like a bolt of bright light in the night sky'!
